Step Three: Painting the Cabinets

Welcome to part three of my RV overhaul. 

After much waffling and debating with myself back and forth, I decided to repaint the cabinetry in the RV.  I wasn't sure whether or not to paint because I didn't want to compromise the integrity of its vintage feel.  However, there were a fair amount of damaged areas, so I opted to go ahead.  Here is my process.

I began by taping areas I wanted to protect.

Next, I removed the hardware from the cabinets and cabinets from where they were mounted.  These cabinets are very old; likely the originals (hence my indecisiveness), and made of laminate.

With laminate cabinets, I really didn't see sanding as a option. I decided to primer the cabinets instead.
This primer, Zinsser 123 Bulls Eye Primer, is really fantastic.  It works almost like an adhesive.  It adheres to any surface, giving it a matte, semi-rough feel, which allows for the paint to bond.  What I love about this primer is that it dries lickety-split, so you can begin to paint in approximately twenty minutes (or was it the sweltering California sun?). 

I used a very thin application of the primer before I began to paint.

The paint I chose is a very dark espresso.

It took two coats and a bit of touch ups (two and a half coats total if that's a number).  Here is my result.

Step Two: Painting the Interior

Welcome, Friends!  This is step two of my RV overhaul.  When I chose the colors for the interior, I really wanted to have a vintage-meets-modern feel.  I also wanted a pop of color in a fun shade. Both colors I chose are Valspar paints from Lowe's.  To alleviate the amount of work, choosing a paint with primer already mixed in is a sure-fire way to go.   For the walls, I opted for a light shade of blue reminiscent of the soda shops of the early doo-wop era.

I wanted the seating to stand out, so for the cushions, I chose a very bright sunshine yellow.

I wanted the window treatments to be a direct contrast to the paint and really stand out. To accomplish that look, I chose a vivid black and white damask pattern. Fabric, Walmart. 

Here are a couple of photos of my walls and window treatments before I went to work. 

I didn't remove the existing paper, instead opting to paint directly over it. I used a very thin angular brush. If you choose a brush like this with stiff bristle hair, and use a very steady hand, you won't need to tape most areas beforehand. 

Remove hardware from walls, paint, and replace.

Step One: Countertop and Backsplash

Hello, Friends.  Welcome to part one of my RV overhaul.  Thank you for joining me along this journey. In this step, I revamped the countertop and backsplash.  I wanted to create a modern-looking backsplash, but I was afraid that using true stone would be too heavy, so I opted to use wallpaper.
 

Here is the before. 

The wallpaper I chose from Lowe's looks incredibly real and was really easy to put up. First, remove as much as possible of the existing wallpaper.

I used this universal wallpaper and border paste.  

I find it works best by tipping upside down, squeezing until the glue comes out, and roll onto wall. Apply a generous amount. 

Apply one wall first.  Then, line up the paper on the second wall. I paid special attention to the pattern; and cut where I needed to.  There were a lot of cuts and quite a few sheets put up, because the paper comes on a small roll. I wanted to ensure the paper looked cohesive.

Score with an exacto knife. 

I used Rustoleum Transformations for countertops to redo the counter area. The directions are pretty basic; you clean beforehand and simply paint onto the surface.
